Final Blog: Major Project

It has been a truly an enriching journey in terms of learning new tools and adding more things in my skills set. First of all thanks to Dr. Alec and all my classmates for a constant support and guidance. I learned many things from EC&I832 subject and became more confident and motivated.

For my major I chose the option of “Personal Journey into Media”. I deeply analyzed some applications like Blooket, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. I figured out some of the best ways to use these applications in a classroom or education purposes. Moreover, I studied the privacy policies for each of the tool and posted a blog on how one can keep them safe by simply changing their privacy policies.

Below is the detail of all the work done for my major project.

In the beginning I chose the concept of gamification in education and worked towards it. I posted an introductory blog where I discussed that how game-based learning triggers the cognitive process and this comes as a rewarding method of learning.

I started exploring some applications which can be useful for gamification in learning and checked out Blooket, Kahoot, and Gimkit. As Blooket was new for me, so I decided to move forward with it. I created an account on Blooket and tried to play many types of games. It was a kind of self practice. I created questions on legos, science, maths, and image recognition. Also, Blooket provides the sets of questions and we can import the questions from a separate file. By this educational game, student can play several games as a homework or leisure activity. I created a Blooket tutorial on Blooket and posted it on YouTube where I explained that how this application works and how we can use this tool for educational purposes. This video was posted on my blog page. I connected Blooket with Facebook as there are many pages where one can make groups and play such games. It increases motivation of children and proves to be rewarding.

After this I decided to go with a social media app which was Snapchat. Before this, I only knew to apply filters on Snapchat and click some funny pictures. But after checking the options of Snapchat I found that it also has some games and I found some games which can be used for educational purposes. The two games were “Word Blitzz” and “Word Doodle”. Snapchat games can be fun and I believe that schools could promote it as social media is popular these days among children. In my blog I explained about Snapchat games in detail.

Now, it was time for Instagram. This time I tried something different from gamification and I explained that how Instagram can be used in classrooms or educational purpose. I created some reels, highlights, and images related to Maths and daily activity. I also explained that how teachers can post their lesson plans on as Instagram highlights. I pasted the screenshots of some of my posts from Instagram in my blog. I created a PODCAST on Instagram for Classrooms and explained everything in detail. It was a new leaning for me as I learned that how we can use this social media app more effectively.

Now, it was time to read some Privacy Policy of all the application on which I worked. I checked the Terms and Services and Privacy information of the applications that I chose for my major project. I learned that how we can keep ourselves safe online by simply changing the privacy settings. It’s an easy way out to protect students and teachers form cyber harassment or cyber bulling. Teachers and students should have enough knowledge of these terms and conditions as if one “Accepts” it, they give right and permission to that app to use your information.

All in all, while studying about all these applications I have become more confident that I can use them in my classroom. I enjoyed working on these applications and learned that how these are useful for educational purposes.

THANK-YOU

Summary of Learning

Wow. Time has flown so fast. It’s hard to believe we are almost done with our semester. I am grateful to Alec and all my classmates for such a knowledgeable journey. I have learned a lot from EC&I 832 subject. I was not aware of many tools such as Flipgrid, Peardeck, and websites like Bit wander, Yandex which I learned from this class. Also, the Ribble’s nine elements of digital citizenship is very interesting and covers to be a good citizen online. I worked with my classmate Lovepreet and together we completed our Summary of Learning. I am also thankful to Lovepreet for her time and efforts in this assignment.
